Fredrick knew that starting his own barbershop would allow him more creativity and connection with his clients. He was right.
WHAT LED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS?
I created BarCuts as a welcoming place that is fun and relaxing for people with all types of hair. I was frustrated by my experiences throughout the city when employers didn’t know how to place me because of my diverse skills and clientele. I wanted my business to be closer to my clients, and I wanted a place where I could express myself. That’s how BarCuts was born.
WHAT MAKES YOUR BUSINESS UNIQUE?
We offer drinks with every service as well as a photo shoot. I redesigned my living quarters to resemble a storefront barbershop/salon. My business is now a place where clients can come to relax, have a cocktail and regroup. It’s my mission to make my customers as comfortable as possible. I offer customized services for women and men with all textures of hair, and include my clients in the process.
WHAT DOES BEING A BUSINESS OWNER MEAN TO YOU?
Owning my own business gives me the freedom to see what I’m capable of accomplishing without boundaries. I can be more creative and express myself. I’m learning to work through challenges, and am finding new avenues to grow my business. These lessons are developing my character, endurance, and strength.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING DIFFERENTLY THIS YEAR TO REACH CUSTOMERS AND GENERATE SALES?
After COVID lockdown, I had to think of ways to generate sales as well as attract new clients. Social media has played an instrumental role in changing how I think about myself and my business. I learned how to use my phone to create stunning photos and videos. I also built a website so potential customers could find out more about me.
WHAT’S THE BEST HOLIDAY GIFT YOU EVER RECEIVED?
The best holiday gift is my clients’ trust and their repeat business. I’m fortunate enough to have clients that have been with me for years. Every year they make sure I’m well taken care of during the holiday with generous tips, even during this trying time. Clients I haven’t seen in a very long time always make it a point to reach out. That makes my holiday so special.
