Volunteer Opportunities
Project-Based Volunteering
One-on-one projects between a professional volunteer and an entrepreneur that focus on a specific marketing, finance or legal topic, such as entity formation, contracts, digital marketing strategy, financial management and more. These ventures are short-term and usually take a few weeks to complete.
Pro-Bono Consulting
Allow entrepreneurs the opportunity to focus on a specific legal, finance, or marketing topic by providing one-on-one, one-hour virtual consultations tailored to their needs.
Lead a Workshop
Reach a group of small business entrepreneurs when you volunteer to host an online or in-person educational workshop or teach a virtual course to share your experiences and offer insights and your skillset on small business marketing, legal, or finance concerns.

The experience required varies by program: Marketing volunteers should be knowledgeable in the services they wish to provide, those looking to provide logo design and website design services should have an active portfolio and around 3 years of experience. Finance volunteers should at least be analysts, associates and/or upward early career financial professionals with experience in Financial Analysis and Projections (eg. financial statements, spreadsheets, simple modeling/forecasting) and Bookkeeping and Accounting (eg. financial statements, familiarity with Quickbooks/Wave or other small business bookkeeping software). We also welcome Spanish-speaking volunteers able to support spanish-speaking small business owners
As a volunteer, you get to opt in according to the schedule that fits your lifestyle. The specific time commitment varies depending on the volunteer opportunity (from a few hours to a few weeks) but all opportunities have a limited scope and duration. While some people volunteer during the day, you can volunteer during the evenings and weekends, depending on the opportunity, your schedule and the small business owner’s availability and preferences.
All opportunities are online and can be done virtually. Volunteers are located preferably in the United States or in a country with a similar time zone.
All individual volunteers are required to complete and submit a volunteer application. After you submit your application, you will hear from a program staff member to set up a time to connect and learn more Start Small Think Big and volunteer opportunities.

Small business owners access our services for free. In addition, volunteers offer their time pro bono and are not allowed to charge small business owners for their time or raise expectations of future fees (i.e. soft sell). If a project requires a small business owner to incur costs (e.g. printing business cards, purchasing a website domain, paying for Quickbooks, and incorporation or trademark filing fees), those costs fall on the small business owner.
Yes! For each volunteer opportunity, you will receive a resource to get you started (e.g. creative brief template for website and logo design). If you need additional resources, you can always reach out to your program contact.
All small businesses we work with sign a liability release form before they accept our services and volunteers are released from any liability arising from or related to the services they offer to small businesses.
