Are you looking for legal help for your small business? Looking to start a nonprofit? Want to explore the resources that are available to strengthen your business or nonprofit?
The Small Business Legal Academy is a one-day event bringing together corporate law firms, civil legal services organizations, financial services consultants, City and State agencies and other service providers to strengthen New York City’s vibrant and diverse small-business community. Join us for this exceptional opportunity to receive free consulting services, including free one-on-one legal consultations with attorney specialists in the areas of corporate law (e.g., legal entity structure and formation, contracts); real estate (e.g., commercial leasing); intellectual property (e.g., trademarks, copyrights, and patents); employment law; and tax (e.g. sales tax, filing taxes, non-profit tax-exemption). Nearly 100 lawyers from premier law firms will be available for one-on-one legal consultations throughout the day, from 9:00am to 3:00pm.

Raising Capital for your Small Business - A Panel of Lenders

Need help navigating the small business financing landscape? Not sure what to expect when you apply for a small business loan? Join us for a FREE interactive panel discussion to learn about acquiring small business financing. Representatives include micro-lenders, a community bank, a credit union, and a crowd-sourced lending organization. Each panelist will briefly describe their role in the lending process and then we will open the floor to your questions. During the panel discussion, you can expect to learn about:
✓some available small business lending programs as well as alternative sources of small business financing,
✓some of the types of business loans that are available to small businesses,
✓common misconceptions that people have about the various types of lenders (micro-lenders, private banks, credit unions),
✓lender expectations (including what is necessary to qualify for funding), and
✓the importance of positive personal credit for small business owners.

Consumer Debt Legal Clinic

The Consumer Debt Legal Clinic provides an opportunity to meet with an experienced attorney to discuss consumer debt legal issues, such as a default judgments or creditor harassment. Clinic attorneys can help with any of the following issues:
o Frozen bank accounts and garnished wages
o Identity theft
o Consumer debt judgments
o Credit reporting errors/disputes
o Debt collection harassment/general problems with creditors
o Student loans
o Medical debt

Part I - Legal Essentials for Doing Business Online (6:00pm - 7:00pm) - Executive Conference Room
Doing business online is a great way to reach new markets, but it also presents some legal issues. This presentation will cover:
- Website Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policies, including whether and when you need to use them, what you should include, and what they mean;
- How to avoid copyright infringement issues when adding textual and photographic content to your business website;
- Sales tax rules in and out of NY State for online merchants; and
- Social media's intersection with business and law, including website comments sections and employee privacy.

Part II - Do-It-Yourself Business Website Design Clinic (7:00pm-8:30pm) - Computer Lab in Room # 506
New and existing businesses will learn basics for building simple business websites using low-cost user-friendly drag-and-drop platforms (such as WIX or Squarespace). Following a 45-min presentation, Joe will be available for an additional 45 minutes to assist and answer questions as attendees attempt to practice what they've learned by creating their own business websites in the computer lab on-site.
